RECAP

The road to the first Super Bowl win for the Raiders was a long one. It started on Feburary 4th, 1969 - just over a year after their Super Bowl II loss - John Madden was named the head coach of the Raiders. During the next eight seasons Madden would compile a record of 83-22-7 - the best record of any NFL team - and miss the playoffs just once. However in the playoffs, he had lost one AFL Championship game (1969) and four AFC Championship games (1970, 1973, 1974, 1976). The Steelers had eliminated them in the last two seasons and three times during his tenure. So it was a sweet victory on December 26th, 1976 when they finally beat them and where back on the sport's biggest stage.

The Raiders gained a Super Bowl record 429 yards, including a Super Bowl record 288 yards in the 1st half over Vikings - who themselves had played in three Super Bowls (1969, 1973, 1974) upto then without a win.

Fred Biletnikoff was named the MVP for his four catches for 79 yards, making Freddie the only Wide Receiver to have been named Super Bowl MVP without gaining more than one hundred yards on the day.

Road To The Superbowl
The Vikings lost only twice during the regular season by a combined total of five points. That record brought them to the NFC Divisional game where they beat the Redskins thanks in part to 100 yard rushing games from Foreman and McClanahan. The Vikings then beat the Rams in the Championship game on an afternoon in which the wind chill factor plummeted to 12 below zero by games end. This left the Vikings entering their fourth Super Bowl having lost too the Steelers ('74), the Dolphins ('73) and the Chiefs ('69).
As with their previous trip to the big game the Raiders lost only one game during the regular season (again on week 4 but to the Patriots this time). In the divisional play off game they faced that team again. They came away with a victory but that was thanks to two 4th quarter touchdowns, the last of which coming with just 10 seconds remaining on the clock. This lead to a repeat of the last two AFC Championship games. Games the Raiders had lost but this time the Raiders shutdown the Super Bowl champion Steelers, with the final score being 24 to 7.
